Vito'nun izle, Vito izle, Sonrasında Stonewallyeni siyasallaşmış bir Vito Russo, sesini eşcinsel bir aktivist ve medyada LGBT temsilinin eleştirmeni olarak buldu. Hollywood'un ekrandaki eşcinsel tasvirlerini eleştiren ilk kitap olan "Selüloit Dolap" ı yazmaya devam etti. 1980'lerdeki AIDS krizi sırasında Vito, 1990'daki ölümünden önce yeni kurulan YASA ile adaletin tutkulu bir savunucusu oldu.
